To better understand Class AB amplifiers, we need to first briefly understand the working principles of Class A and Class B amplifiers:

Class A Amplifier: When a Class A amplifier is operating, the output transistor remains on throughout the entire signal cycle. This means that regardless of whether there is an input signal, the output transistor is always conducting, resulting in extremely clear and pure sound quality. However, this design also leads to extremely high power consumption and heat generation, resulting in lower efficiency.

Class B amplifiers: In Class B amplifiers, the output transistor operates only during the positive or negative half-cycle of the input signal, remaining off during the other half-cycle. This significantly improves efficiency and reduces power loss. However, this design can introduce crossover distortion, where unwanted distortion occurs during signal switching, affecting sound quality.

Class AB amplifiers combine the characteristics of Class A and Class B: Two transistors operate independently during the two half-cycles of the signal, ensuring no crossover distortion occurs during signal transmission, while maintaining the purity of a Class A amplifier at low power. Thus, Class AB amplifiers maintain low crossover distortion while significantly improving efficiency.

Specifically, the output transistors of a Class AB amplifier operate during a smaller portion of the input signal (similar to Class A), but during the larger portion, the two transistors operate alternately (similar to Class B), thus achieving a balance between sound quality and efficiency.

Class B amplifiers are more efficient but suffer from greater crossover distortion. Therefore, Class AB amplifiers typically have better heat dissipation than Class A amplifiers, while still maintaining good sound quality.
